CO-OP INFORMATION

About the Co-op

Royal City was built in 1989 and is a twenty-eight unit housing co-op with about 35 members. We have 17 two-bedroom and 11 three-bedroom units. The co-operative consists of two buildings constructed above a common underground parking garage. One building is a block of two story townhouses. The other consists of ground level one-story apartments and an upper level of two story apartments; this building also includes the mail room and member bulletin boards.

We are a violence-free, member run, family friendly, mixed-income, multicultural community built on cooperative principles and mutual respect for one another.

And we are “green”! There is a bank of solar panels on the townhouses, and solar hot water systems on the apartment building that serves the 14 upper apartments.  Solar power is sold back to the grid and the Co-op receives remuneration from Guelph Hydro. Each of the 14 upper level apartments is equipped with a solar hot water system. Water, heated by the sun, fills individual hot water tanks reducing the amount of electricity needed to heat water.

We just recently had heat pumps put into the seven townhouses. Heat pumps cool in summer and heat in winter reducing the need for electrical baseboard heat and window air conditioners.

Guelph Transit bus routes run nearby on Yorkshire St and goes to Stone Rd Mall. The bus route on London Rd goes to Willow West Mall.

Downtown is a ten-minute walk away and has lots of shopping, restaurants and Planet Bean, the co-op coffee shop. The Guelph Public Library is also a ten-minute walk from the co-op located at 100 Norfolk St. Beautiful Exhibition Park is close by as well as many schools are in the area.

The laundry room is available at all times and washers cost $1.00 per load. Dryers cost 25 cents for 15 minutes. There is convenient underground parking for members for $20 per month, a visitor parking spot on-site, and on-street parking on North St and adjacent streets. There are outside climbing toys for our toddlers, an enclosed courtyard equipped with shade-sails and picnic tables, and of course, popular Exhibition Park is just minutes away.
