In 1986, Carine needed decent affordable housing and attended a Co-op Housing Information Session in Waterloo. She immediately filled out her application for Brighton Yards Housing Co-operative. Carine moved into the co-op, became involved as a member, and knew very quickly that the cooperative way was the way for her. From that time, it has been her life work. In 1989, she left the City of Kitchener Planning Dept and joined Waterloo Wellington Non-Profit Homes (WWNPH), the local resource group. WWNPH developed 1,520 co-op housing units, in Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph, Brantford, Hamilton and Owen Sound. During the years from then until now, Carine has worked with and provided training to co-op boards during development, occupancy and management phases. Since 2003 until the present, she has been the manager at Willowside Housing Co-operative and a member of Asgard Green Co-operative Homes, both in Kitchener.
